Trump's order allows Army, Navy, Air Force, and Homeland Security officials to call up to 1 million reserve soldiers for a maximum service period of 24 months.
The president said on Friday evening that the decision "will enable us to mobilize medical and emergency personnel to help us fight the new crown virus by recruiting thousands of experienced soldiers, including veterans."
The president did not say whether anyone would be compulsorily recalled, but said that some retirees have taken the initiative to "act for the country at this special moment."
Pentagon chief spokesman Jonathan Huffman said in a statement released on Saturday that Trump's executive order allows Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper to order troops and individual members to perform tasks, including "certain federal Reserve team members. " The federal reserve includes retired and reserve soldiers, who are rarely recalled.
Pursuant to Article 673 of Title 20 of the United States Code, the President has the right to recruit reserve personnel upon authorization from Congress.
