President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla back to the White House Tuesday evening for a state dinner in the East Room.

Trump opened the dinner by lavishing praise on the royal and joking about the bipartisan reception King Charles III received during his address to Congress earlier Tuesday.

"He got Democrats to stand, I've never been able to do that. I couldn't believe it," Trump joked.

Trump also remarked about the long history of the U.S. and the U.K., calling it a "very, very special and incredible friendship."

King Charles III began his toast by reflecting on the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on Saturday, "paying tribute to your own courage and steadfastness, as well as to your security services for their swift actions on Saturday evening in preventing further injury," the king told Trump. "My thoughts and sympathies are very much with you, the first lady and all those guests for whom this must have been a very upsetting incident."

There were light-hearted moments in the king's toast as well.

The king referenced Trump's decision to tear down the East Wing to build a White House ballroom, making a joke referencing the burning down of the White House during the War of 1812.

"On this occasion, I cannot help noticing the readjustments to the East Wing, Mr. President, following your visit to Windsor Castle last year," the king said. "And I'm sorry to say that we British, of course, made our own small attempt at real estate redevelopment of the White House in 1814."

Towards the end of his remarks, King Charles presented the president with the bell from HMS Trump, a British ship during World War II.

King receives bipartisan applause during speech with no outbursts

The House chamber remained at capacity throughout the king’s remarks. It was not apparent that any lawmakers walked out of the address in protest and there were no protests or outbursts.

Several times, Charles was met with bipartisan praise -- including when he spoke of checks and balances on executive power and when he called for peace in Ukraine.

The king departed the chamber and shook hands with military officials, retired Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle -- including Senate leaders John Thune and Chuck Schumer -- and other rank-and-file House members.

King urges cooperation amid strained UK-US relationship

Amid tensions between the U.S. and U.K. over the war in Iran and other diplomatic issues, King Charles urged cooperation between the two countries.

"The story of the United Kingdom and the United States is, at its heart, a story of reconciliation, renewal and remarkable partnership," he said. "From the bitter divisions of 250 years ago, we forged a friendship that has grown into one of the most consequential alliances in human history.

"I pray with all my heart that our alliance will continue to defend our shared values with our partners in Europe and the commonwealth and across the world, and that we ignore the clarion calls to become ever more inward-looking," he said.

  Charles emphasizes importance of NATO

King Charles emphasized the importance of the NATO alliance as he spoke about how the U.K. answered the call after the terror attacks against the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001.

"Today, Mr. Speaker, that same unyielding resolve is needed for the defense of Ukraine and her most courageous people," Charles said. "It is needed in order to secure a truly just and lasting peace from the depths of the Atlantic to the disastrously melting icecaps of the Arctic."

"The commitment and expertise of the United States Armed Forces and its allies lie at the heart of NATO, pledged to each other's defense, protecting our citizens and interests, keeping North Americans and Europeans safe from our common adversaries," he said.

His comments come amid Trump'scriticism of NATOafter several allied countries refused to back the U.S. war in Iran.

Packed chamber, standing ovations, laughter: Something we don't see often in divided times

It's something that we don't see often in a divided Congress: a packed chamber, full of laughter, unity and standing ovations.

The laughter in the chamber is echoing off the walls. The king has had to stop a few times to allow for more laughter and applause.

Democrats and Republicans are listening attentively -- more than they do with a president even from their own party.

Loud applause after Charles' comments on checks to executive power

King Charles, speaking on American independence, said the founding fathers brought with them some ideals rooted in British common law -- including the Magna Carta.

"The U.S. Supreme Court Historical Society has calculated that Magna Carta is cited in at least 160 Supreme Court cases since 1789, not least as the foundation of the principle that executive power is subject to checks and balances," he said.

The remark was met with loud applause from the chamber.

Charles on WHCA dinner shooting: 'Acts of violence will never succeed'

King Charles decried acts of violence as he briefly mentioned the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on Saturday night.

"We meet, too, in the aftermath of the incident not far from this great building that sought to harm the leadership of your nation and to foment wider fear and discord. Let me say with unshakable resolve, such acts of violence will never succeed," he said.

Charles says US, UK destinies 'have been interlinked'

Kicking off his speech, King Charles thanked the American people for being welcomed during the semiquincentennial year of the Declaration of Independence. The remark prompted a huge applause from attendees.

"For all of that time, our destinies as nations have been interlinked," he said.

King Charles, Queen Camilla met with standing ovation

King Charles and Queen Camilla entered the House chamber to a standing ovation. The applause continued as the two walked down to the dais.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are filling up the House chamber, with the excitement of a joint meeting in the air as guests begin to take their seats and wait for the House Sergeant at Arms to announce the arrival of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Hundreds of ticketed guests have crowded the House gallery, giving the event the feeling of a State of the Union address -- absent the president. Each member of Congress was given one ticket to give to a constituent or special guest.

Atop the speaker's rostrum, Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson chatted while dignitaries filled the room.

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, wearing a lavender suit in the chamber, was also present when Queen Elizabeth gave her 1991 address to Congress.

King Charles to deliver rare address to Congress

King Charles will soon deliver a joint address to Congress, a key moment of his four-day state visit. The last British royal to speak to a joint session of Congress was Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.

There will be plenty of pomp and show surrounding the king's speech, including a bipartisan escort committee that will trail him as he makes his way to the speaker's rostrum. Supreme Court justices, the diplomatic corps and president's Cabinet are all invited to attend as well. Vice President JD Vance is expected to sit alongside Speaker Mike Johnson atop the rostrum.

During the joint meeting, members of Congress may try to "hog the aisle" to get a moment gripping and grinning with the king.

Trumps, royals exchange gifts at the White House

During their meeting at the White House, President Trump and King Charles exchanged gifts, according to the White House.

Trump gave Charles a copy of a 1785 letter written by John Adams to John Jay. In the letter, Adams describes being received by King George III as the first U.S. ambassador to Great Britain. Charles gave Trump a framed copy of the 1879 design plans for the Resolute Desk.

First lady Melania Trump gifted Queen Camilla with sterling silver teaspoons from Tiffany&Co. and some White House honey. On Monday, the Trumps showed the White House beehive to the royals. Queen Camilla gave Melania Trump a brooch from British designer Fiona Rae.

  King Charles arrives at Capitol

The king is now on Capitol Hill, where he will soon deliver an address to Congress. King Charles posed with House Speaker Mike Johnson for a photo as he entered the building.

The speaker and the king will soon walk through the Capitol for a meeting with the rest of congressional leadership, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

King Charles leaves White House, will soon address Congress

King Charles and Queen Camilla have left the White House, according to pool reporters. President Trump told reporters he had a "really good meeting" with the king.

Next, King Charles will head to Capitol Hill to address a joint meeting of Congress around 3 p.m. Charles is expected to meet with Johnson and top bipartisan congressional leaders before his address.

Trump pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth

In his speech on the South Lawn, President Trump took a moment to remember Queen Elizabeth II, who he called "an incredible woman who I had the privilege of getting to know."

Trump was received by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace during a state visit in 2019, during his first term.

Trump said the late monarch was a "very special woman who is very greatly missed on both sides of that mighty Atlantic."

Military flyover takes place over White House

President Trump, King Charles, first lady Melania Trump and Queen Camilla observed the military flyover from the balcony of the White House.

Trump: 'Americans have had no closer friends than the British'

Amid diplomatic tension between the U.S. and the U.K. over the war in Iran, President Trump spoke about the "special relationship" between the two nations.

"In the centuries since we won our independence, Americans have had no closer friends than the British," Trump said. "We share that same root. We speak the same language, we hold the same values, and together, our warriors have defended the same extraordinary civilization under twin banners of red, white and blue."

  Trump delivers remarks

"What a beautiful British day this is," President Trump said as he kicked off remarks with thousands of guests gathered outside the White House South Lawn on a rainy morning in Washington.

The royals' state visit is to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence from Great Britain.

"Honoring the British king might seem an ironic beginning to our celebration of 250 years of American independence, but in fact, no tribute could be more appropriate," Trump said. "Long before Americans had a nation or a Constitution, we first had a culture, a character and a creed."
