American bystander killed in shootout in Mexican resort city: Officials
An American bystander was killed during a shootout in a resort city in Mexico involving the military that also injured six individuals, according to Mexican officials.
Four other civilian bystanders and two soldiers were injured in the "violent incident" in San José del Cabo over the weekend, according to the Baja California Sur State Attorney General's Office.
The deadly shooting unfolded late Saturday into Sunday, according to the state attorney general's office. Los Cabos police encountered an "ongoing armed confrontation" near the Costa Dorada neighborhood, according to the state attorney general's office.
Two members of Mexico's Ministry of National Defense were found shot -- a 20-year-old soldier with life-threatening gunshot injuries and a 25-year-old soldier with non-life-threatening injuries -- and transported to the hospital, officials said. Two other soldiers had taken "defensive positions" near a pickup truck "riddled with bullet holes," the state attorney general's office said.
Investigators learned that five civilians who had been traveling in their personal vehicles at the time of the shootout were admitted to a hospital with injuries, among them a 31-year-old man from California who later died, officials said.
The other victims included a 14-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds and a 65-year-old woman with a life-threatening leg injury, officials said. A 35-year-old man and 43-year-old woman also suffered unspecified injuries.
Authorities seized high-caliber firearms, a loaded grenade-launcher attachment that was mounted on a rifle, multiple magazines, a tactical vest containing five loaded magazines and other evidence from the scene, officials said.
The state attorney general's office said Sunday it has opened a criminal investigation for aggravated homicide and attempted aggravated homicide in connection with the shooting and will "continue carrying out all necessary scientific and legal investigative actions to fully clarify the events and locate those responsible."
Officials did not say how the confrontation began or release any information about the suspects in the shootout.
