100 million people from Texas to Michigan in path of severe weather, possible tornadoes
More than 100 million people were in the path of severeweathersweeping across parts of the U.S. on Tuesday night, from Texas to Michigan.
The system was forecast to spawn strong tornadoes, destructive winds and hail the size of baseballs.
A swath of severe weather was forecast from north-central Illinois, including Chicago, to northwestern Indiana. Multiple strong tornadoes were possible throughout the region, with the highest risk encompassing the cities of Burlington and Quincy, Illinois, and Fort Wayne, Indiana.
There were numerous reports of damage in Kankakee County, Illinois, where a large and extremely dangerous tornado was on the ground earlier Tuesday evening.
The Kankakee County Sheriff's Office said "extensive damage" was reported in Aroma Park. There were no immediate reports of injuries, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
A tornado watch was issued for north-central Illinois, along with small portions of Missouri, Iowa and Indiana until 11 p.m. local time.
Chicago was expected to have heavy thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon and into the evening. Flash flooding is possible for the Chicago area as storms could linger for an extended period of time.
Enhanced risk for strong tornadoes, large hail and strong winds were also forecast for Tuesday evening from Central Texas, including Abilene and Wichita Falls, into south-central Oklahoma.
