  Bessent

Iran live updates: Negotiators believe they have draft deal, leaders haven't approved

President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites.

Following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire, initial U.S.-Iran talksin Pakistan in April failed to reach a peace deal.

Trump later announced the open-ended extension of the ceasefire and the continuation of a U.S. blockade until negotiations are concluded "one way or the other."

Bessent does not say if there is a final agreement ready between the U.S. and Iran

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent did not commit to saying that a deal with Iran is currently on the table despite reports that the U.S. and Iran have reached an agreement but need President Donald Trump’s final approval.

Bessent said he wasn’t going to preview a peace deal and that the negotiators have been "going back and forth," during a press briefing Thursday.

Bessent suggested that "perhaps have the makings of a deal here" when it comes to an agreement with Iran.

Netanyahu says Israel aims to control 70% of Gaza Strip

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed Israel aims to control 70% of the Gaza Strip.

“We are currently squeezing Hamas; we now control 60% of the territory of the Strip — you know this. We were at 50[%], we moved to 60[%]. My directive is to move to ... First of all, 70[%]," Netanyahu said while speaking at an event Thursday.

"Let’s start with that. We’re pressing them from all sides; we’ll deal with the remnants," he said.

Ceasefire still in place despite CENTCOM's claims of violations

Despite U.S. Central Command's assertion of an "egregious ceasefire violation" overnight by Iran, the existing ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. remains in place, a U.S. source confirmed on Thursday.

The ceasefire, which has officially been in place since April 8, has not stopped both countries from periodically exchanging fire. The president has repeatedly asserted that the ceasefire remains in effect in spite of those exchanges, describing one such strike against Iran in early May as just a "love tap" to ABC News and denying that the ceasefire was over.

"No, no, the ceasefire is going. It's in effect," he said at the time.

Later that day, Trump said the world will know when the ceasefire is over when it sees "one big glow coming out of Iran."

Negotiators believe they have draft deal, but leaders haven't signed off

American and Iranian negotiators believe they have arrived at a draft agreement to formally extend the ceasefire and gradually open the Strait of Hormuz that can win the support of both countries, but President Donald Trump and Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei have not yet given their final stamps approval -- meaning there is no deal at this point, according to two U.S. officials and another source with knowledge of the negotiations.

Both Trump and Iranian leadership have rejected deals in the late stages of negotiations before. The U.S. officials also say the Trump administration is still concerned about the fractured Iranian regime’s ability to coalesce behind any agreement, but that high-level Iranian officials have indicated the regime can accept the terms that are currently on the table.

U.S. sources also confirmed that U.S. and Iranian negotiators have reached a deal, but it still needs Trump’s final approval, which was first reported by Axios.

The U.S. officials confirm that the president has been briefed on the draft memorandum of understanding, and say it would see the Strait of Hormuz fully opened over the course of 60 days -- with Iran loosening its grip on the waterway and the U.S. pulling back its naval blockade in synchronized steps until the strait returns to its pre-war status quo.

Bessent says US Treasury continues to target Iranian regime

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the U.S. continues to target the Iranian regime, saying its troops are not getting paid, the police are not reporting for work and Kharg Island is shut down.

"The Iranian economy and currency are in free fall. Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) is a joke, and today Treasury has sanctioned it. We have warned any corporate or state entities against paying tolls or hiding them as aid payments," Bessent said in a post on X Thursday.

"Forming a Wall of Steel, the U.S. Naval Blockade has ensured a record low amount of Iranian crude on the water. We will also be shutting down both Iranian airlines’ access to landing spots, refueling, and ticket sales. Only a satisfactory outcome in negotiations will end the downward spiral," he said.

IDF claims strikes on 135 alleged Hezbollah targets in 24 hours

The Israel Defense Forces said Thursday that it struck more than 135 alleged Hezbollah targets across Lebanon over the previous 24 hours.

The targeted areas included Tyre and other parts of southern Lebanon as well as the Beqaa Valley in the east, according to the IDF. The IDF also confirmed a new strike in Beirut on Thursday.

Overnight, the IDF issued more forced evacuation warnings to residents of Lebanon, specifically the city of Tyre and Zaqqoq Al-Mufdi in the south of the country.

Israel confirms new strike in Beirut

The Israel Defense Forces said in a post to X on Thursday that it carried out a strike on Lebanon's capital Beirut, though it did not immediately specify what the target was.

Local media reported an explosion in the Choueifat area in the south of the city.

CENTCOM says Iran launched missile toward Kuwait

U.S. Central Command alleged in a post to X on Thursday that Iran "launched a ballistic missile toward Kuwait that was successfully intercepted by Kuwaiti forces," in what it called an "egregious ceasefire violation."

CENTCOM said the missile launch came shortly after Iranian forces launched five attack drones in and near the Strait of Hormuz.

"All drones were successfully intercepted by U.S. forces which also prevented a sixth drone launch from an Iranian ground control site in Bandar Abbas," CENTCOM said.

Israeli strikes rock Tyre in southern Lebanon

Israel launched fresh strikes on the southern Lebanese city of Tyre on Thursday morning, following the Israel Defense Forces' latest evacuation order for residents of the city.

Earlier on Thursday, the IDF issued an "urgent warning" to residents of Zuqaq al-Mufdi, a neighborhood in Tyre, to evacuate ahead of planned strikes.

Tyre has been a regular target of Israel's strikes in southern Lebanon. The IDF says it is targeting Hezbollah members and infrastructure, but Lebanese officials report a rapidly mounting civilian death toll.

Between March 2 and May 26, Israeli forces had killed at least 3,213 people and wounded another 9,737 across Lebanon, according to a tally from the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.

The continued killings come despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreed between Lebanese and Israeli leaders in April. Israel says its ongoing strikes are necessary to degrade Hezbollah capabilities and stop the Iran-backed group from firing toward northern Israel.

Hezbollah, meanwhile, continues its attacks on Israeli forces prosecuting Israel's ground campaign inside southern Lebanon and longer-range attacks into northern Israel.

Kuwaiti air defenses respond to 'hostile' missile, drone threat

The Kuwaiti Army said in a post to X on Thursday morning that its air defenses were "responding to hostile missile and drone threats."

IRGC says it targeted US airbase used in Bandar Abbas attacks

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement on Thursday that it attacked the U.S. airbase from which American forces launched strikes on Bandar Abbas.

"This response is a serious warning to the enemy that any act of aggression will not go unanswered, and if repeated, our response will be even more decisive," the IRGC said in the statement, which was carried by the state-owned Press TV channel's Telegram account.

"The aggressor bears full responsibility for the consequences," the IRGC added.

US conducts new airstrikes in southern Iran: US official

The U.S. carried out new airstrikes in southern Iran, shooting down four one-way attack drones that posed a threat around the Strait of Hormuz and then a ground control site, a U.S. official said.

The official said U.S. forces struck an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was about to launch a fifth drone.

The official called the strikes "measured, purely defensive, and intended to maintain the ceasefire."

This is the second time in three days that the U.S. has carried out self-defense strikes against Iranian military targets in southern Iran.

On Monday the U.S. carried out airstrikes against Iranian missile locations and boats that U.S. Central Command said were preparing to launch mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump says Iran wants to make a deal, but he isn't 'satisfied'

Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, President Donald Trump said the Iranians "want very much to make a deal," but an agreement hasn't been reached yet.

"We're not satisfied with it, but that we will be. Either that or we'll have to just finish the job," Trump said.

"Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. I'm doing that for the world. I'm not doing it just for us," Trump said.

White House says negotiations are proceeding 'nicely'

The White House addressed reports on an initial memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran on Wednesday, saying that negotiations are "proceeding nicely" and that the president would only make a deal "which must ensure that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon."

“As President Trump has said, negotiations are proceeding nicely and he has made his redlines clear. President Trump will only make a good deal for the American people, which must ensure that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon," White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said in a statement when asked about the reports.

Iranian State TV reveals details from potential US-Iran MOU

Iranian State TV has released details of what it said is in a possible Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and U.S., but aknowledged the agreement has not yet been finalized.

As part of the agreement, U.S. military forces will withdraw from the surrounding environment of Iran, and the naval blockade of Iran will be lifted, Iranian State TV said.

In return, Iran has committed to restoring the number of commercial transit ships to pre-tension levels within one month. Military vessels are not included in this agreement, according to Iranian State TV.

The management and routing of ship traffic will be carried out jointly by Iran and with the cooperation of Oman, according to Iranian State TV.

If a final agreement is reached within a 60-day period, the deal will be confirmed through a binding United Nations Security Council resolution, according to Iranian State TV.

The White House Rapid Response account railed against the reports of an initial memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran, claiming it to be "not true" and a "complete fabrication."

"This report from Iranian controlled media is not true and the MOU they 'released' is a complete fabrication. Nobody should believe what Iranian state media is putting out. FACTS MATTER," the Rapid Response X account said, in response to a Fox News broadcast detailing the report of the alleged document.

Israeli strikes kill 31 more people in Lebanon, officials say

Israeli attacks killed at least 31 people and wounded 40 others in Lebanon on Tuesday, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, as Israel said it was "deepening" its military operation there.

Four children were among the dead and 10 other children were among the injured, the health ministry said.

Since March 2, Israeli forces have killed at least 3,213 people and wounded another 9,737 across Lebanon, according to the latest tally from the health ministry. The continued killings come despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreed between Lebanese and Israeli leaders in April.

Israel claims its strikes are targeting Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure, but Lebanese officials have reported many civilians among the casualties.

On Wednesday, Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Avichay Adraee issued a new evacuation order for the southern Lebanese city of Nabatieh, warning that the IDF intended to act "forcefully" against alleged Hezbollah targets in the area.

Hezbollah, meanwhile, continues its attacks on Israeli forces prosecuting Israel's ground campaign inside southern Lebanon. The Iran-backed group is also regularly launching longer-range attacks into northern Israel.
